NMT Assignment 2

New Media Development and Trend

Evaluation of current website(eg. More interactive media), Youtube, About and broad members of CCF

Website: www.ccf.org.sg

The Children Cancer Foundation website links are displayed very systematically. However, it is plain and lacking of digital interactive platform. Although they provided sufficient basic information for users, yet it is still not engaging enough. In the website, there are limited animations and images. As this is a website that concentrates on childhood cancer, there should have more kids type protocol displayed. However in the website under “Gallery”, there is the use of digital media, as there are posting of photos and videos of the past events happenings. This allow the users to be able to know much about what events are actually occurring and how it is being managed, beyond just words; These videos are not connected via Youtube. Instead are displayed in an external media.

In addition, there could be more interactive media being added such as a 3-D photo gallery and slideshow that showcase the photos from different events. Furthermore, there are no social networking tools that is adapted in this website, therefore to increase awareness and to reach out to a larger audience.

Facebook

As of 2 January 2011, Facebook has generated up to 600 million active users. Therefore, it would prove to be efficient for the Children Cancer to be involved in an large social networking sites such as facebook. Based on the evaluation on the Children Cancer foundation website, they organizes various events monthly. However, there are very little approach used to promulgate such events, as people are unaware of such happenings unless they were to visit the website itself. Thus, using Facebook as a event planning would

With social networking site like Facebook, each individual event could be notified to everybody whom are associated within each other in  their Facebook.

When organzing an event in facebook, it saves time and reaches out to not only friends, but friends of friends. “Of course, this means that if you create an event through publisher, it will make the event fairly open to your friends, who can also invite other friends. It doesn’t seem to be designed to be used for events that are meant for a select few of your friends. “

A particular event could be first set up by the event planner, or the organizer from the CCF.  Using the event planner on Facebook, details could be added regarding the event. Such as the location, the event timing, what will the event be about, and many more. By a single click of the button, the event would be notified to everybody. Any changes or updates of the event could be easily altered by the event planner as well.

After you set the main logistics of your event, you’ll be asked to add details. That includes a picture, category, and description, as well as important rules about what your guests can do on your event page. These details are optional (though some are selected for you by default, so it’s a good idea to go through them).

Enable the event wall – This option adds a message wall to your event page. It’s a good idea to include a message wall if you want people to be able to post reasons why they can or can’t come to the party, or be able to ask questions.

Enable the event photos, videos, and links – You can also allow people to post photos, videos, and links to your event page. This is great for certain types of events — such as posting pictures of your mailbox so guests know which driveway is yours for a party, or posting links to articles about a specific topic for a political rally, or videos of a band for a concert. You can restrict the ability to post media to admins only.

Allow guests to bring friends to the event – This toggles a message about whether guests can bring friends on and off.

As such, other than reaching to a large audience, people whom are interested would not need to log on to the CCF website in order to access and check what are the events avalible. This proves to be more convenient.

Twitter could be created for the Children Cancer foundation, and also with the use of Web 2.0. There could be communication channel included in the sites, where discussion could be generated. From the website, some of the testimonials are brief and short. Instead, there could be a blog or an RSS created where the testimonials could be published there. The blog would allow more content to be published.

Museum Trip Reflection

1) Identify 2 of your favorite (ACM) exhibits of which the content is presented in the most creative way to enhance users interaction and overall experience.

The two favorite exhibits of mine was the South Asia gallery and the Southeast Asia galleries.

2) Briefly describe at least 2 media tools/technologies the museum had used for public communication and education at the various exhibits.

One of them is, in almost everyone of the exhibition galleries, there is always a screen located nearby each exhibitions, that has a man or woman face in it. Upon touching the screen, they would explain about the culture and what the particular is about. This is very useful for users who might not be able to understand from the summary overview displayed on the exhibitions. Or for those who wish to find out more.

Another is in the gallery showcasing the thailand culture, where they set up a wide screen show that presents to the visitors thailand traditional dance. There are also thailand citizens that will share more of thailand arts and performance, while the video of the dance is being played.

3) To make 1-2 recommendations (using new media tools) to improve the way the current content is being presented to the public. (can include ACM’s website too)

The website can be upgraded to such that there will be different languages allowed for the users to choose from to view the content of the website, other than the international language english. Maybe the four main language in singapore.

The gifts and souvenirs can be displayed at the website for the visitors to view and purchase online instead of going down to the museum itself to buy it. Especially for overseas foreigner whom might be returning to their country could still view and buy the gifts if they need.

Journalism does the reporting of events such as governmental, politics aspect to entertainment, social aspect to the public. These reported articles and news are usually published using traditional media, such as television, radio and print publications. They transmit stories or news and usually play the middle role between the public and public relations. However, as the technology evolves, and the world wide web becomes more advance, journalists found a way into using the social media to improve on reporting more efficiently. Moreover, Journalists are relied and expected to report news that are truth and up to date. This article is about how journalists is using the social media to widen their horizon of journalism, and the media tools that are popular in usage among them. The reason why I chose this article out of the other articles is because journalism are often neglected. We read the news and gain information of the the world’s happenings, from assessible both traditional to new media ways. However, it doesn’t appeal to us where these news are from, how they are painstaking reported. We merely, absorb the updated information. Furthermore, journalists worked together with the traditional media and new media closely, constantly forming a controversy among these two. It will be interesting to know how the new media has affect journalism. In addition, this article is very informative, it talks about the new media tools that journalists are using currently, how relient and effective these tools has enabled the journalist, making reporting easier and more fulfilling.

Key findings;

New media tools, How the new media tool has aid in the publication, traditional media, and promoting the social media.

Twitter(Crowd Sourcing)/Facebook:  Twitter can be used to hunt for sources, and search for information. It allows users to interact online , share ideas, and engaged in a two way conversation. Twitter enables users to form an engagement with their audience, as such by posting a single comment, it can be viewed by all of the participants. As such, news are being reported and spread rapidly among the audience. Moreover, twitter enables journalists to be aware of what topics are attracting interest, and the public positive or negative views of any current issues. Apart from reporting, journalists could also promote a social brand or anything related to that, even without clicking on the “tweets”, most users usually glance and scroll through them. It presented it like a two way advertisement communication channels, where both parties can interact with one another. Not forgetting, by googling one’s own names, the user twitter profile is often able to be tracked down.

Facebook is an multi-community channel that connects multiple users at one go. With its user-friendliness, the users are able to be searchable by your personal particulars, as it mentioned in the article. In the article, it shows Tracy Swartz and Lauren McCullough using of facebook has helped their work in a way or another. (uses Facebook to communicate with bus drivers. These city employees friended her on Facebook so that they could send her information about city transportation.

social networks and news engagement manager for The Associated Press, can also attest to the importance of Facebook when looking for sources.) (as taken from the article.) Both are of different jobscope however, they equally benefit from using facebok, as it is this trackable. Facebook was intended for social networking initially. However, as millions of people have be using it, it becomes a business tool to share work and build contacts. Facebook is also connected from one person to another, by posting a post, similarly to a tweet on twitter, all your friends will inevitable to chance upon it. A status update post is almost like a news source itself. Lastly, facebook allows one to create a community group, it is a useful organisation for distribution of stories, and journalists could highly benefit from such channels.

Youtube/blogs: Journalists not only post articles or photographs. But they also post up videos. Youtube becomes a sharing resource channel, but focus on videos types. (Olivia Ma, news manager at the video-sharing site, recalls seeing thousands of videos being uploaded to the site depicting upheaval in the streets, clashes between dissenters and police, as well as gruesome killings, of the Iranian killings) ( as taken from the article). One happening, a hundred videos as a response, this show the rising populated youtube have became. One video could arises to million of viewers at times. Youtube videos are not merely spread through copies of video republication, but word of mouth. The content and happenings of the video became propaganda. As it’s the journalists job to report on the happenings, when they post these activities on the new social media, it will ensure to reach more wider audience.

Traditional media

Television, radio and most commonly print publications are labeled as traditional media. We could only have access to the news on these media is when we chance upon them on radio or television, or we purchase the newspapers to read. Most of the public are used to the form of reporting by the traditional media as it has been around for many years. Moreover, it was commented that these traditional media information and news are more trustable and reliable as compared to the new media. However, posting on advertisements on traditional media requires money to do so, while in new media, it is quite so the opposite. Some journalists are highly against new media as the rate of revenue produced by the earnings of the traditional media has decreased. Publications have been reporting significant loss of readership as well as ad revenues to online media. However, some journalist uses both traditional media and new media respectively.

New media has definitely made life more assesible and easier for the public. Letting them gain knowledge of any latest happenings and sharing their views. It also aid in journalists reports, giving a larger audience, and creates more opportunity in engagement. Now, everyone can take part in exchanging their thoughts, and thus expanding our horizons and also increase their Web-traffic. Enabling utmost interaction among anonymous users, and thus generating the freedom of speech. However, it will cause a decline in traditional media in one way or another, as more people becomes adaptable to the new media ways of processing information, as such the country economy might be slightly affected. Also, with a overload of information on the new media, its difficult to decipher which articles are true and which are false. Or how accurate the article are, as compared to traditional media, which has sustainability. Lastly, plagiarism are common, therefore journalists has to be more creative.

All in all, both the new media and traditional media should be kept in place with the society, and relate together. New media should not eliminate the form of traditional media totally. As they both reach out to the different vast of individual audience. I believed that they are interdependent on another. Traditional media, alone is a success, however allied both of them together, it would take journalism to the next level.
